Yeah! It’s over. Man United won at Wigan thus retaining their Premier League crown. John Terry is inured and will mostly miss the champions league final which makes it even better a reason for The Red Devils to celebrate. My Champagne, where ardt thou? Anyhoo, it has been a terrific weekend of football. With Fulham staying up, Middlesbrough scoring 1353 goals past Man City, and Reading going down by just a matter of three goals has just made the final day of the English Premier League Season 2007/08 even more memorable.
This if you ask me has been one of the best seasons of premier league football ever since the Premier league started back in 1992. A close title race with three horses almost till the end. The winner being decided on the last day, the relegation battle being likewise has all just attracted more viewers. The top four teams though have remained the same with Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. Everton will play in the UEFA Cup as they deservedly finished fifth along with Tottenham which won the Carling Cup and also Man City who are leading club in the fair play league to already have not secured a place in Europe. Portsmouth looks set to join them. Aston Villa get to play in the Intertoto cup. The middle of the table has the usual teams such as Blackburn, West Ham, Tottenham and Newcastle which are followed by below average teams such as Boro, Wigan, Fulham, Bolton etc which deserve nothing more. I think the table looks perfect considering the performances of these teams. No team is in a position where they don’t deserve to be which is very important. Of course Chelsea sucks and deserve to be relegated but from a neutral perspective everything else seems to be perfect. In all Manchester United have come out as deserved winners and I seriously think they’ll beat Chelski in Moscow as well.
Cristiano Ronaldo is the top scorer in the league followed by Fernando Torres. Both have been simply superb. The latter broke Rutegrus’s recored for the most number of goals in a debut season by a foreign player last night by scoring against Spurs. I couldn’t have asked for a better player to beat that record. Cesc Fabregas has been brilliant and so has been Michael Ballack at least in the latter half of the season. Emmanuel Adebayor has exceeded expectations. Theo Walcott as usual has been given much more credit than what he deserves simply because of ‘The Anfield Run’, but Wenger is giving him just what he deserves. Rio and Nemanja have been as solid as they ever were but they do look shaky at times. Ashley Young has been the find of the season for me. He has combined really well with his Aston Villa team mates. Newcastle have made the comeback of the season. King Kev has finally shown us what he can do. Fulham have completed the comeback of the season by staying up. And of course it’s always nice to not have top 4 team in the F.A Cup Final.
In all an extraordinary season and definitely a feast for the fans.
Glory Glory Man United!!
